Adding a web app to the home screen (iOS)

[update] The following post is aimed at those using iOS 6. If you’ve updated to iOS7, as you should have by now, click here for an updated tutorial.

Has anyone ever asked you to add their web app to your home screen, leaving you wondering what the heck were the words that just came out of their mouth? Or maybe you’re the one doing the asking and you want to link your user to an easy tutorial with screenshots?

Either way, the blow steps will help you do what you gotta do:

Step 1: Open the website in Safari

This part is easy, if you’re an iOS user you will know what Safari is by now. So open it up and type/paste in the link that you were given.

Step 2: Tap the “share” icon

Below is a screenshot with the “share” icon circled and showing what happens when you tap it.

Click the "share" icon (circled)

Step 3: Click “Add to Home Screen”

Click on the “Add to Home Screen” option displayed in the image above.

Step 4: Give it a name

What you see next should match the image below. You can give the web app a name of your choosing. Then click the blue “Add” button to the top right of the popover.

Set a name for the web app and click "Add"

Step 5: Open the web app

You should now be taken to your home screen, you will see an icon on it for the web app that we just added to your home screen. Tap the icon to open the app, just like other “real” apps.

Tap on the app icon to load the web app

And that’s it, you’ve done it! Great job guys! 😀
